81-Year Old Uses His Pistol to Protect His Wife From Burglar

An elderly couple wait to cross the road

Senior citizens often fall prey to scam artists and burglars but one Floridan fought back to protect the woman he loves.

Richard Hansis, an 81-year old New Smyrna Beach homeowner, heard a knock on the door at around 9:15 AM. He looked out the window and saw a white male with blonde hair wearing a light blue shirt and khaki pants standing there but didn’t recognize him so he refused to open his door, reported The Daytona Beach News-Journal.

When the suspect realized he wasn’t getting in through the front door, he slipped on a pair of white gloves and went to the back door.

Hansis saw the man break his living room window and reach through the broken glass to try and undo the lock.

Fearing for the safety of his 79-year old wife who was sleeping at the time, Hansis reached for his .22-caliber pistol and let off three or four rounds, striking the suspect at least once.

The suspect fled the scene, jumping in his white mid-2000s-era Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and as he drove off, Hansis let off a few more rounds at his truck. The suspect remains at large and police encourage anyone with any information to contact Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida at 888-277-TIPS (8477) or westopcrime.com.
